Duke University Center for Interdisciplinary Engineering, Medicine & Applied Sciences (CIEMAS)
The CIEMAS is a four-building, 322,000-square-foot complex and a major expansion for the Pratt School of Engineering, which more than doubled its teaching and research space. The $97 million center supports over 375 faculty members, researchers, graduate students and staff, and integrates science and engineering into the aesthetics and operation of the building design. It is Duke’s first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) research building, featuring roof membranes that deflect solar energy, motion-sensing lighting controls and a hidden 70,000-gallon cistern to capture rainfall for landscape irrigation.
Working with Skanska USA Building as the Construction Manager, MOCA Systems provided professional services during the construction phase of the project. MOCA delivered detailed scheduling support through construction simulation based on the detailed design drawings and technical specifications. The schedules were used by the field staff to assess phasing, monitor and control construction progress, and forecast completion dates. Construction proceeded smoothly, on-time and on-budget.
